Iris Diebrook was one of the most gifted food producers among the small community of artisans working in Ireland. Her work, with her partner Oliver Neuwirth, on Manch Farm, in Cork, was a by-word for extraordinary quality.
Together they made the fabulous sheep's milk cheese, Orla, which last year won a gold medal at the London cheese show; the brilliant sheep's milk yogurt which was unquestionably the finest to be found in the country; amazing charcuterie from their own pigs; and extraordinary vegetables, including the desire potatoes, which are the finest I have ever tasted.
The couple assiduously travelled to food fairs throughout the country, and each year organised a farm open day to raise funds for the Children of Chernobyl project. For all the people who knew Iris, her tragic death is a terrible blow, for she and her work were both practical and inspirational.
Like many people, I will remember her not only for the foods she crafted so well, but also for her resplendent sunflowers, which she grew, she once told me, for her soul. I am sure I speak for the entire community of food producers and cooks in Ireland in extending deepest sympathies to Oliver.
