Three Chinese men have been jailed by Judge Yvonne Murphy in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for their role in a brawl about money owed to a brothel.

One of the three, Zhang Da Wei (26), North King Street, Dublin, who was also convicted after an eight-day trial recently of kidnapping a fellow national, was jailed for five years.

Chen Long (23), of Sherrard Street, and Yang Wang (23), of no fixed abode, were jailed for four years in relation to the fatal brawl on July 10th last year. They were in an opposing gang to Zhang. All three pleaded guilty to violent disorder and of producing a knife.

Zhang was also jailed for four years for five counts of false imprisonment, one of robbery and one of aggravated burglary in Dún Laoghaire on July 8th, 2002. This sentence is to run concurrently to the five-year sentence for the O'Connell Street crime.

Judge Murphy said she would give Zhang one year extra for the O'Connell Street offence than his co-accused, as he was also convicted of the Dún Laoghaire case.

The brothel was owned and managed by a "triad" gang and "staffed" by Chinese women.

The court had heard that Zhang had part of his scalp cut off but it was later found on the street and reattached surgically.

Yang was stabbed in the neck by one of his own gang and would have died if not for the quick intervention of the gardaí. He later thanked them for saving his life.
