The National Transport Authority intends to introduce public bike schemes in four regional cities by the second half of next year.

The NTA yesterday invited sponsorship applications for bike schemes in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.

The sponsorship contract will allow naming rights to the bike scheme and advertising and branding on the bicycles and at bike stations.

Typically the contracts will last for between three and five years, with each city available for sponsorship on an individual basis.

The deadline for applications is December 18th. Tobacco, alcohol and politically motivated sponsors are excluded from applying.

The scheme proposes 235-265 bicycles for Cork, 200-250 for Galway, 135-165 for Limerick and 80-100 for Waterford.
