Sinn Fein is to hold a vigil at the gates the Dail today in memory of IRA hunger striker Kieran Doherty who died 25 years ago.
Doherty was elected as a TD for the Cavan-Monaghan constituency in the general election of June 1981
Caoimhghin O'Caolain, who currently holds the seat for Sinn Fein, said he was proud to have helped in the victory.
"It is with both sadness and pride that I recall my predecessor Kieran Doherty, who was elected during the heroic hunger strike of 1981," he said. "I was proud to have helped, along with hundreds of others, in securing his election and I am proud to have inherited Kieran's seat as a republican representative for this constituency."
Ten IRA and INLA inmates in the H-Block prison complex just outside Belfast died on hunger strike as they fought for the right to be recognised as political prisoners.
