Severe weather warning issued

A severe weather warning has been issued today by Met Éireann, which says that outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow will spread across the country today.

Snow accumulations of between 2cm and 5cm are expected in midland areas and in parts of Munster and Leinster and later on in east Ulster, with higher values likely on hills. Heavy rain is also likely along southern and eastern coasts.

A small craft warning has also been issued. Met Éireann says northeasterly winds will reach force 6 at times today and tonight on coastal waters from Carnsore Point to Roche's Point to Loop Head.

"We have a band of rain coming up from the south which will become more widespread. It's heavy enough at times over Munster and will turn to snow in areas. Along the cast it will be mainly rain but further inland and on higher ground sleet and snow can be expected," said forecaster Klara Finkele.

"Temperatures didn't get up much today and tonight we are looking at a widespread frost with temperatures generally between -3 and -6 degrees."

Ms Finkele said the band of rain, sleet and snow currently crossing the country will clear eastwards overnight but added that a second band from the north would pushing inland tomorrow as the day progresses.

There will be sunny spells in the south east tomorrow and scattered wintery showers further north. Tomorrow is also expected to be blustery due to southwesterly winds and temperatures will reach a maximum of 7 degrees. Winds are forecast to die down on Sunday and it will be cold but sunny.

Ms Finkele said heavy rain is due to hit the country early next week which will lead to a rise in temperatures of up to 10 degrees.

In England, Leeds Bradford International Airport was forced to suspend flights this afternoon due to adverse weather conditions.
