A MAN who assaulted his ex-girlfriend during a jealous rage has been sentenced to two years.

Darius Tankevicius (34) of New Seskin Court, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday to assaulting Diana Petruskeviciute at her home in Tallaght on June 12th, 2010.

Garda Cian Sears told Judge Martin Nolan he discovered the victim lying in a blood-soaked bed with injuries, including broken teeth and a puncture wound through her lower jaw that penetrated into her mouth.

Garda Sears told prosecution counsel Kerida Naidoo that the victim awoke to find Tankevicius standing over her in her bedroom.

Tankevicius had accused Ms Petruskeviciute, his former girlfriend, of beginning a new relationship with one of her male neighbours and began punching her repeatedly in the face.

He then held her arms above her head and placed his hand over her mouth before dragging her by her hair and throwing her outside her apartment. He then fled the scene.

Garda Sears agreed with defence counsel Barbara Maguire that he made admissions on arrest.

Judge Nolan said Tankevicius was guilty of a particularly serious crime and the only mitigating factor was his guilty plea, which spared his victim the ordeal of giving evidence. The judge passed down a two-year sentence but suspended all but nine months on condition Tankevicius keep the peace for two years.
