Pete Sampras won his fifth US Open title and 14th Grand Slam with a 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Andre Agassi.
Sampras looked to be cruising to victory as he overwhelmed a tired-looking Agassi in the opening two sets, dropping his serve just once in the process.
But in the third set, Agassi surged back to win 7-5 with a barrage of his trademark passing shots.
In the fourth, that trend continued with Sampras struggling to hang on to his serve and he was nearly broken when Agassi missed a seemingly easy volley that would have made it 3-1.

But Sampras then found new energy as he held for 2-2 before and later claimed the crucial break to go up 5-4 and then serving out to win.
