Concerns over the proposed sale of the Sellafield nuclear plant into private ownership were raised in the European Parliament last night by Dublin MEP Eoin Ryan of Fianna Fáil.
Speaking in Strasbourg, he challenged the British government to give "serious assurances" about safety standards.
"Safety standards have been poor enough while the Sellafield plant was under the public control of the British government. Now that the private sector will be taking over the Sellafield facility, serious assurances concerning safety standards at the Sellafield plant must be given and the buck stops clearly at the door of the British government."
