Buenos Aires - The Argentine human rights group Mothers of Plaza de Mayo sent an outspoken letter to Pope John Paul yesterday criticising him for seeking clemency for the former Chilean dictator, Gen Augusto Pinochet.

The Mothers, who all lost sons and daughters in the "Dirty War" against suspected left-wing activists waged by the Argentine military during its 1976-83 dictatorship, delivered the letter to the papal nunciature.
