The Jamican registered tug intercepted off the west coast after initial suspicions that it might have been involved in drug smuggling is now expected to be towed to Galway docks this morning for a thorough search.

Plans to tow the 120 foot Aegir to Galway last night from Inis Mor, where it sought shelter on Monday, were abandoned due to adverse weather and tidal conditions.

The tug, which has a nine man crew including Dutch, Canadian, Ghanaian, Russian, Belgian and Polish nationals, had been under observation since it developed engine trouble several days ago.

Customs sources confirmed it was boarded by customs officials in Killala Bay on Friday.
