A helicopter on its way to pick up climbers in the Mount Everest area has crashed killing a Nepalese flight attendant and injuring six other people.

Two of the wounded, including the pilot, are in a critical condition and are being flown to Kathmandu for treatment.

There are reports it hit a party of walkers on their way down from the mountain.

Two army rescue helicopters were sent to the area but it isn't yet known how the accident happened.

Hundreds of climbers and their teams are in the region to mark the 50th anniversary of the conquest of the world's highest mountain in 1953 by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

BBC reporter Tom Heap saw the crash while filming a report about the anniversary.
