A priest and a nun in Bethlehem have been shot by Israeli troops according to a peace activist in the area.

Details are still unclear, but the activist said the priest is dead and the nun is in critical condition.

The priest, Fr Jacques Assad, a French-Arab priest in the Santa Maria Convent in Bethleham, was reportedly shot by Israeli soldiers.

According to the activist, the nun is one of 15 in the convent.

The whole Bethlehem area has been declared a closed military zone and no press are allowed admittance.

Earlier this morning, in Ayda refugee camp in Bethleham, heavy gunfire was reported and Israeli soldiers were said to be swarming throughout the camp.
