Kaduna - The Nigerian city of Kaduna began implementing a modified form of sharia law yesterday after plans to introduce the strict Islamic penal code last year started sectarian riots that left over 1,000 dead.

The Muslim-Christian clashes which first erupted in Kaduna in February, 2000, have since been replicated in other major cities in northern Nigeria, which is wrestling with the most devastating cycle of violence in the country for over 30 years.
