The British number one, struggling with illness, played some of the best tennis of the week but found his obdurate opponent too much to handle in a high-quality match.
Though failing to add to the only ATP title of his career — in San Jose 11 months ago — Murray's performance this week means he will improve on his best ever world ranking of 16 when the new list is announced next week.
