Monaghan selector and Cavan Gaels manager Gerry McCarville has been handed a six month ban for attacking an umpire after the Allianz Football League meeting with Kerry last weekend.

McCarville was reported for physical abuse of a match official and was handed the lengthy suspension at a meeting of the CDC (Central Disciplinary Committee) last night.

The incident, which GAA president Sean Kelly condemned earlier in the week, occurred as the players and officials made their way to the dressing rooms at Scotstown. Kerry won the tie with a controversial injury-time Colm Cooper point.

McCarville's ban will rule him out of any role in Monaghan team affairs until August 23rd and will also prevent him from managing the Cavan county champions until the same date.
