Man held after sword attack in Antrim

Three people were injured when they were attacked by a sword-wielding man in Northern Ireland today.

Three people were injured when they were attacked by a sword-wielding man in Northern Ireland today.

A woman in her late 30s suffered serious head injuries when the attacker burst into a house at Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, at around 1am.

The three occupants of the house at Pinewood Avenue, the woman and two males, were were all injured.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the woman's injuries, although serious, were not believed to be life-threatening.

A 37-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth were also injured, but less seriously.

A man has been arrested and was later being questioned by detectives.

Police said they were seeking to establish a motive for the attack and appealed for anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact them.

However a spokesman said the attack was not believed to be connected to tensions within loyalism in the Carrickfergus area.
