London - A father accused of strangling his seven-year-old son "to put him out of his misery" helped a friend with his gardening later that day, a court heard yesterday.

Mr Karl Hammersley-Baker (31), a care assistant, who is alleged to have throttled Kirk Hammersley-Baker with a scarf and then dumped his body in an outhouse, also told a friend his son had "gone to stay with an uncle", Stafford Crown Court heard.

The defendant, of Fletcher Road, Boothen, Stoke-on-Trent, is said to have admitted the killing to police, describing how his son gasped for breath and attempted to struggle free. He denies murder and administering the anti-depressant drug Prozac to the boy.
