A County Down man appeared in court today charged with stabbing his lover to death in their Bangor flat on Bank Holiday Monday.

David Jones, 36, was charged with murdering Pauline McConnell, 41, when he appeared at Downpatrick Magistrates Court.

The body of Ms McConnell was found by police with a single stab wound to the chest in the couple's ground-floor flat at Lismore Avenue in Bangor's Whitehill estate in the early hours of Monday.

The court heard that unemployed Jones called police to the scene.

Detective Sergeant Gary Reid told the court that when initially cautioned, Jones had replied: "It wasn't meant for her, it was meant for me."

The officer said Jones was interviewed more than ten times over three days and was co-operative.

He said that when charged last night Jones made no reply but the detective said he believed he could connect the accused with the offence.

Jones was remanded in custody to appear at Newtownards Magistrates Court by video link on January 14.
