Soccer – SPL Review:Motherwell consolidated third place in the Scottish Premier League table as two own goals handed them a 2-1 victory over Dundee United, while Colin Calderwood suffered defeat to Aberdeen in his first match in charge of Hibernian.

Scott Severin and Sean Dillon both bundled the ball into their own net either side of David Goodwillie's penalty equaliser. But the home side were well worth their victory as United struggled to cope with their attacking play.

Rudi Skacel netted a hat-trick as Hearts beat St Mirren 3-0 for their first home league win of the season. The Czech Republic international's cultured left-foot was the source for two first-half goals - the first after 74 seconds and the second a curling free-kick after 24 minutes - and netted his third with the last kick of the game.

Saints had few chances of note and now have five points from nine matches this term and are still seeking their first points away from Paisley.

Calderwood suffered a painful 4-2 defeat to Aberdeen. The Dons, who had previously taken only one point from a possible 18, squandered a couple of decent scoring chances before Chris Maguire broke the deadlock after 18 minutes with a clinical finish.

Scott Vernon added a second after 33 minutes when his goal-bound volley took a wicked deflection off Hibs defender Sol Bamba and rolled into the net.

The Aberdeen goal-scoring duo combined five minutes after the break to grab a third, this time with Vernon sliding home Maguire's shot-cum-cross at the back post.

Paul Hartley scored a fourth from the penalty spot before Colin Nish pulled a goal back for the visitors after 63 minutes. Bamba headed home a second for Hibs in the final minute of the match but Aberdeen held on to record their second home league win of the season.

Inverness remain unbeaten away from home in the SPL after inflicting Kilmarnock's third consecutive defeat with a controversial 2-1 victory at Rugby Park.

The visitors took a 42nd-minute lead through Adam Rooney's penalty, the award disputed by Kilmarnock amid claims Momo Sissoko's contact on Russell Duncan was minimal.

Kilmarnock dominated the start of the second half, but Johnny Hayes caught Frazer Wright in possession and finished well to make it 2-0 in the 66th minute.

Substitute Rui Miguel got one back for Kilmarnock with a diving header, his first goal for the club, but Inverness still claimed victory.

A late Danny Grainger free-kick gave St Johnstone a 2-1 victory over Hamilton in a tetchy encounter at New Douglas Park. Striker Sam Parkin had given the visitors the interval lead with a header after 19 minutes of what had been a dire first half.

Former Saints player Simon Mensing levelled from the spot in the 67th minute after defender Michael Duberry had handled a Dougie Imrie corner inside his own box.

But, with four minutes remaining, Grainger drove in a 25-yard free-kick for the winner.
