The worst of the recent heavy rain has passed away but threats of further localised flooding in Munster still linger with heavy downpours expected today, according to Met Éireann.

Today's outlook is for a sunny start but heavy showers affecting mainly the south and west will be widespread by lunchtime.

"The likelihood of further floods is diminishing as water tables subside overnight," said a spokesman from Met Éireann.

"However, showers expected in Cork and Kerry are likely to give serious downpours and I would envisage localised floods in those areas," he told The Irish Times.

There will be but a short reprieve at the weekend from the torrential rain that has lashed the country in the past 24 hours, the spokesman added.

Tomorrow and Saturday are expected to be fairly dry which will give flooding a chance to subside but the unsettled weather looks set to continue on Sunday.

High water tables combined with heavy rain caused much of yesterday's flooding, said the spokesman.

Over 10mm of rain fell in Dublin yesterday with Cork and Waterford recording 38mm.
