Mr James Keane, with an address at Craeval Park, Moyross, Limerick, is charged with murdering Mr Stephen Carey (24), at College Avenue, Moyross, on June 13th last.

Mr Carey suffered a shotgun wound to the upper body and died a few hours later at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

At Limerick District Court yesterday, Solicitor for the accused, Mr John Devane, told the court a bail application was currently being prepared for the High Court.

Judge Tom O'Donnell remanded him in continuing custody to appear again before Limerick District Court on July 7th next.

Boy critical after Co Meath crash

A two-year-old boy was in a critical condition in hospital last night following an accident involving a car and two lorries on the N1 road near Gormanston in Co Meath.

The child was a passenger in a car travelling northwards when, close to the junction for Mosney, it collided with a lorry and the impact from that collision sent it into the path of another lorry.

The child, his mother who was driving the car and one of the lorry drivers were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The child was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin with life-threatening injuries.

Baby information pack launched

The Child Health Information Service Project (CHISP) is launching a pilot information pack for the parents of babies in South Tipperary today, writes Georgina O'Halloran

The pack consists of a booklet and audio CD entitled Caring for your Baby: Birth to Six Months Old.

It is the result of a pilot project, carried out by CHISP in conjunction with the South Eastern Health Board, to develop quality information services for the parents and carers of babies and young children.

The CHISP is expected to extend the scheme to all parents in the entire South Eastern Health Board region, if it receives positive feedback.

Honorary doctorate for Wood

An honorary doctorate is to be conferred on former Irish rugby international Keith Wood at the University of Limerick on Tuesday next.

The British and Irish Lion is now retired from playing and is a successful businessman and rugby analyst.

Born in Killaloe, Co Clare he played under-age hurling for his county along with current rugby international Anthony Foley.

Wicklow man cleared of rape

A 25-year-old Wicklow man has been cleared by a jury of raping and sexually assaulting a 43-year-old neighbour in her home in 2001.

The jury at the Central Criminal Court took less than 30 minutes to find him not guilty of committing the crimes in her home in the early hours of the morning of November 11th, 2001.

Mr Justice Paul Carney discharged the accused and thanked the jury for its attention to the case.
