MONROVIA - Three foreigners were detained briefly in Liberia yesterday by militia men loyal to a warlord under siege by African peacekeeping troops, UN officials said.

The militiamen abducted the three men an American, a German and a Kenyan in the town of Kakata, northeast of Monrovia, in reprisal for the siege of warlord Roosevelt, Johnson's house in the Liberian capital. They were freed after the UN special representative, Mr Anthony Nyaki, asked Gen Johnson to intervene.
