A decision to grant planning permission for apartments at the 17th-century Kilmainham Mills in Dublin is to be appealed by residents and heritage campaigners.

Dublin City Council gave permission for the five-storey mill building in Kilmainham village to be converted into 10 apartments and for a two-storey mill annexe to be converted to a duplex apartment.

However, those opposed to it intend to appeal to An Bord Pleanála, claiming the development is not consistent with the village's heritage sites. Mr Damien Cassidy, chairman of the board of trustees of Kilmainham Gaol, said the mill dates back to the 17th century and was the last example of a water-driven mill from the River Cammock.
