Swimming:Ireland's 4x200 metres women's freestyle relay team finished sixth in the final at the European swimming championship in Debrecen, Hungary but their time of 8.09.15 will not earn them a place in the London Olympics later this summer.

The Irish quartet of Sycerika McMahon, Melanie Nocher, Nuala Murphy and Bethany Carson qualified in seventh place for the final (8.13.30) and improved that time by almost four seconds but were still outside their personal best (8.07.66). They needed to beat the latter mark to make London.

Making that standard for the London Olympics is based on the top 16 in the world, twelve teams have already qualified at the World Championships in 2011, which leaves just four places. It will be June 1st before the top 16 places are confirmed but it won't contain the Irish quartet.

Shani Stallard (2:31.87) and Fiona Doyle (2:32.30) qualified in 13th and 16th places from the heats to reach this afternoon's semi-finals of the 200m Breaststroke. Doyle, competing in the first semi-final was a second slower, finishing eighth. Stallard too was marginally down on her heat time and suffered a similar fate in the second semi-final.
