Entries for 2021 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards to open this month

The awards programme will celebrate the best in Irish journalism over the past year

The 2021 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards will open for entries on July 12th, organisers have announced, with former Irish Examiner editor Tim Vaughan to chair the independent judging panel.

The awards programme, which is sponsored by the National Lottery, will celebrate the best in Irish journalism over the past year, with 23 categories spanning all areas and disciplines of the trade.

Entries will be accepted up until July 30th for work published in print, online, video or audio from any NewsBrands Ireland member title.

Chief executive of NewsBrands, Anne Marie Lenihan, said the annual awards are an “important showcase” for agenda-setting journalism that is in the public interest.

The Irish Times won in 10 of the 25 categories at the 2020 awards and also took home the top prize with its Lives Lost series.

Paul Dervan, from the National Lottery, said the organisation is “incredibly proud” to continue recognising the important role of “trusted, independent” journalism in Irish society.

“Our country has always had a long and proud tradition of producing outstanding journalism and these awards rightly recognise the journalists who perform a vital public service through ground-breaking reporting at a time when we need it most,” he said.
