The final 180m stretch of a long-awaited inner relief road will be officially opened in Ennis, Co Clare, today.

The original plan, first agreed almost 15 years ago, comprised five parts.

However, one section, across the river Fergus, is not likely to go ahead due to the cost.

Construction of the last of the other four sections comprising a 180m length of single-carriageway road, along with footpaths and services including new traffic lights, has been completed at a cost of €360,000.

The Ennis inner relief road section E will link Station Road and Clare Road, both regularly affected by traffic problems. The route will also link to Friar’s Walk.
