DPP wants trial of two brothers transferred to Dublin court

The Director of Public Prosecutions wants the trial of two brothers, charged with involvement in organised crime in Galway, moved to Dublin on the grounds that their appearances before the District Court last year attracted “adverse publicity”.

Michael O’Loughlin (30), of Rahylin Glebe, Ballybane, and Eddie O’Loughlin (27), of Rockfield Park, Rahoon, both Galway, are charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation in Galway between February and June 2010.

State solicitor Willie Kennedy told Galway Circuit Criminal Court yesterday that the DPP would be seeking to have the trial transferred to Dublin. Judge Raymond Groarke listed the application for transfer for mention again tomorrow.

School welcomes building progress

A primary school where pupils have had to take physical education classes outside in “all conditions” is one of five schools in Waterford to get a design team for its building projects.

Management of Gaelscoil Philib Barún in Crobally Upper, Tramore has been campaigning for the Department of Education to replace its prefabs. School principal Daithí de Paor said yesterday: “We got great news here today, and we will now be progressed into architectural planning.”

Students tested for TB in Mayo school

Students at a secondary school in Co Mayo have been tested for tuberculosis after a case of the disease was identified among students attending the school.

Health Service Executive (HSE) personnel attended St Tiernan’s College in Crossmolina last week to screen students and provide anxious parents with information.

School principal Conor O’Reilly said there was no need for alarm. The school had called in the HSE, students had been screened and there was a very low risk of anyone picking up the disease, he said.

Jail for man who made gun threat

A man who held a gun over his head and threatened to burn out his neighbours and have them shot, was jailed for three years at Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court. Glen Reenan (22), who at the time was living in Gort Nua, Station Road, Castlebellingham, Co Louth, pleaded guilty to producing the gun during a fight on May 28th, 2009.
