An Irish Road Haulage Association protest on both sides of the Liffey is expected to cause widespread disruption this morning as lorries undertake circular protest routes near the East-Link Toll Bridge.

Two convoys of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are expected to converge adjacent to the East-Link Toll Bridge between 7am and 9.30am to protest at the Government's failure to remove the tolls on the East-Link Toll Bridge.

The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) last night advised morning commuters to avoid the East-Link due to its two-hour "rolling protest".

The first convoy of trucks will circle areas inclusive of East Wall Road, Sheriff Street Upper, Castleforbes Road and North Wall Quay.

A second convoy will take the circular route along Sean Moore Road to the junction with Beach Road/Church Avenue, and then turn and proceed back up Sean Moore Road to the roundabout at the junction with Pigeon House Road.

Jimmy Quinn, spokesman for the IRHA, said hauliers had decided to mount a protest this morning following the Government's failure to remove toll fees at the East-Link Toll Bridge despite previous assurances.

Furthermore, he said IRHA members were dissatisfied at Dublin City Council's recently-published HGV management strategy which suggested that the toll charges be reviewed in the years ahead.

Last night AA Roadwatch warned motorists to avoid the areas surrounding the quays during the protest.

Dublin gardaí said they would maintain a strong presence during the protest to ease traffic congestion.
