A gun attack on homes in a Limerick housing estate was in retaliation for an incident in which a 15-year-old youth was targeted by a gunman last weekend, it has emerged.

In the latest incident linked to the city-wide feud, two men wearing balaclavas and carrying handguns entered several houses in O'Malley Park, Southill, shortly before 7pm on Wednesday.

Gardaí said the gunmen confronted the occupants of several houses and asked them for the whereabouts of a man involved in the vicious Limerick feud.

It is understood the man they sought was responsible for a gun attack in which a 15-year-old youth suffered minor gunshot wounds in Moyross last weekend.

A 42-year-old woman also suffered minor shotgun injuries in the same incident last Sunday night.

The gunmen, who failed to find their intended target, opened fire on two houses in O'Malley Park before escaping in a silver or blue Ford Focus.

Gardaí investigating said yesterday that it was linked to the feud that has claimed six lives in the past six years.

"It displayed total recklessness and a blatant disregard for human life," said Supt Frank O'Brien of Roxboro Road.

Gardaí have been on high alert following the gangland murder of Frankie Ryan in Moyross and up to a dozen feud-related shootings across the city in the past fortnight.

Gardaí confirmed yesterday that no arrests had been made following Wednesday night's shootings.
