Athletics: David Gillick's European Championships were brought to an abrupt end in Gothenburg this evening as the Dubliner failed to make the final of the 400 metres.
Gillick will be forced to chalk these championships down to experience having disappointed in his semi-final, a time of 46.84 seconds well off the pace. The fact that it is well over a second outside his personal best will be particularly galling for the 23-year-old.
While a false start from Britain's Tim Benjamin may have affected Gillick's concentration, he started well enough when the race got underway at the second attempt. But a poor back straight left Gillick with no chance as he failed to keep in touch with the leaders, finishing last of the seven finishers.
There was better news for the Irish contingent in Sweden as national record holder Deirdre Ryan advanced to the final of the high jump, clearing 1.92 at the first attempt to qualify for the showpiece on Friday.
Martin Fagan, the final Irish athlete in action on the second day, finished 11th in the 10,000 metres, 44 seconds behind Germany's Jan Fitschen who took the gold medal in a time of 28 minutes, 10.94 seconds.
Earlier today, Joanne Cuddihy continued her rise through the ranks as she qualified for the semi-finals of the women's 400 metres after running an impressive 51.41seconds to finish second in her heat behind Russia's Olga Zaytseva.
In the women's 100metres, Anna Boyle failed to make it out of heat one as she finished fifth in a time of 11.60seconds. Belgium's Kim Gevaert won the heat in 11.19 with only the top four from each heat to advance.
There was disappointment for Eileen Maher in heat four as the sprinter was forced to withdraw having pulled a hamstring during her warm-up routine.
