Gardaí believe Dublin gunman used bike in attack

Gardaí have appealed for information over the gangland killing of a man in Dublin's north inner city last night

Gardaí have appealed for information over the gangland killing of a man in Dublin's north inner city last night. Gardaí believe the killer cycled up to the victim as he walked near a bar before opening fire and escaping on the bike.

The man (24) was among a group of people standing outside Noctor's Pub, Sheriff Street, Dublin 1, when a gunman opened fire, wounding him in the face a number of times.

The victim was immediately taken to the Mater Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardai at Store Street named the victim this evening as Gavin McCarthy, Oriel Street Lower, Dublin 1.
The attack is believed to be linked to a feud between criminals from the north inner city.

Supt Ray Barry, who is heading the investigation from Store Street Garda Station, said: “We are appealing for information on a young man between the ages of 17-19 who was wearing dark clothing and had a scarf on his face."

“It seems he arrived on the scene on a bike and made his escape on a bike.” Gardaí believe the bike and the handgun used in the killing were dumped nearby but neither has been recovered.

The family of Mr. McCarthy have asked that the media respect their privacy.

Anyone who was in the Sheriff Street area between 8.30pm and 9.30pm last night is urged to contact detectives at Store Street Garda Station (01-6668000).

Local Labour Party TD Joe Costello said the murder showed the Government has "failed to get to grips" with gangland crime and with gun crime in particular.

"We need more targeting of gangs," Mr Costello said. "The Gardaí should also be given additional powers of surveillance and the witness protection scheme should be put on a statutory basis if this cycle of killing is to be ended."
