Four people have died in road accidents in Ireland over the weekend to bring the total number of deaths on the country's roads this year to 336.

A motorcyclist was killed in a head-on crash with another vehicle in Broomfield, near Castleblaney, Co Monaghan, at around 3pm yesterday afternoon.

A pillion passenger was seriously injured in the accident and was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he remains in a critical condition.

The motorcyclist was named as Paul Leonard (33), of Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.

Elsewhere, a man (21) died when the car he was driving veered off the road and into a ditch at Clonroche, near Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, yesterday. He was named as James O'Leary, from Rathnure.

In a separate crash, Grace Aylward (20), from Mullinavat, Co Kilkenny, was killed when the car she was driving hit a wall at Williamstown, Co Waterford, at around 2pm on Friday.

On Friday, a 14-year-old boy, Tungi Olatungi, died when he was hit by a lorry on his way to school in Tralee, Co Kerry.
