Former workers picket over redundancy pay

Former Clubman Omega workers began a picket of the company in Buncrana, Co Donegal, yesterday over redundancy pay.

Former Clubman Omega workers began a picket of the company in Buncrana, Co Donegal, yesterday over redundancy pay.

The picket began at 8.30am outside company headquarters at Lisfannon, over Siptu claims that the shirt-manufacturing company had not implemented a Labour Court recommendation made last November regarding 67 workers who lost their jobs.

Siptu Donegal branch organiser Seán Reilly said the workers were picketing because the company had neither implemented the Labour Court recommendation nor made an alternative offer.

Mr Reilly said the picket would remain "ongoing" for the foreseeable future unless some offer of a settlement was made.

Clubman has told the workers it has met all its legal obligations to them. This includes the payment of their statutory redundancy entitlements in December.

The company said the non-binding Labour Court recommendation of a further 1½ weeks pay for each year of service would cost about €450,000.

Clubman Omega announced the job losses last year along with its decision to wind up all operations in Buncrana and move production to lower-cost Lithuania.

The company blames higher production costs and falling consumer prices. It retains a small marketing and administration staff at its headquarters in Donegal.
