Adult literacy: The Read Write Now TV series is back. It will be broadcast on RTÉ 1 on Wednesdays at 7.30 p.m. from tomorrow.

The series aims to help the 25 per cent of the adult population who have difficulties with reading and writing. There is a free workbook that goes with the series. This can be ordered by ringing the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) freephone support line at 1800-202065.

Read Write Now is a partnership initiative between the NALA, the Department of Education and Science and RTÉ.

Fulbright Awards for study/ research in the US

Applications for the Irish Fulbright Commission's annual awards programme for the 2004 to 2005 academic year will open on October 3rd, with a closing date of November 14th. Awards in the range of €15,000 to 18,000 will be made to graduate students who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in the US.

There will also be a number of post-doctoral scholar awards of up to €10,000 for one academic year.

Applicants must be in a position to outline a clearly defined course of study or research and must obtain their own placements in the US. For further details see www.fulbright.ie.

World Teachers' Day

This takes place on Sunday, October 5th and the Irish Coalition for the Global Campaign for Education is marking the event by urging Irish politicians (TDs, Senators and MEPs) to become involved in the campaign to provide access to education to all children worldwide. Some 113 million children currently have no access to education.

The Irish Coalition for the Global Campaign for Education is: Action Aid Ireland, ASTI, Concern, Irish Congress of Trade Unions, INTO, Oxfam Ireland and the TUI.

Public lecture at UCC

Can we write a life of Jesus? by Fr Jerome Murphy O'Connor, professor of New Testament, École Biblique et Archéologique Française, Jerusalem. The lecture takes place at 7 p.m. on Monday,September 29th in Boole Lecture Theatre 4, University College Cork.

Parents of students at Colaiste Mhuire Catholic secondary school, Ballymote, Co Sligo, are invited to a public meeting on Monday, October 6th at 8.30 p.m. at the Coach House Hotel, Ballymote, to establish a parents' association.

Eighteen Cork schools are to be rewarded for their work in improving the health of their school communities as they join the ranks of Southern Health Board's Health Promoting Schools.
