What was your worst subject? Irish.

If you were choosing subjects for Leaving Cert today, what would you choose?

Some nice easy ones.

Who was your favourite teacher and why?

An English teacher, Kevin Mallon. He encouraged me to report on the school football team and later to get involved in a school magazine. I ended up doing a lot of Gaelic games coverage for the Meath Chronicle and was thrilled to be getting paid (very little) to go to games and write about them

Who was your childhood idol? Morrissey - lead singer of The Smiths.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Star forward for Meath and Liverpool or a rock star.

Where did you go to college and what did you study?

NUI Galway. I studied and graduated from medicine and practised full time in the North. I also got a degree in science after taking a year out to test antidepressants and speed on rats.

What TV programme/film most reminds you of your schooldays?

Dallas. Or Neighbours.

What song most reminds you of your schooldays?

Anything by the Smiths.

What food most reminds you of your schooldays?

My mother's gingerbread.

What was your school uniform like?

We didn't have one, though by default it ended up being jeans, denim jacket and woolly jumper. My year narrowly escaped its introduction, so that by Leaving Cert year we were the only ones in civvies.

What's the boldest thing you ever did in school?

No school uniform meant it was very easy to slip away from school and not be reported.

What was your most memorable holiday?

Brazil and Argentina last Autumn - fabulous countries, brilliant people and got to see some amazing football. Watching Boca Juniors was a highlight.

What's the last book you read?

El Diego by Diego Maradona

Would you send your own children to the same school that you went to?

No. I think single-sex schools are not a good idea.

What was the best thing about your education?

Having long enough at university to try everything and find out what I liked and might be good at.

What was the worst thing about your education?

How honest can I be about the relentless boredom of secondary school?
