London - The editor of the Mirror was interviewed yesterday by police investigating the alleged theft of personal letters from the late Diana, Princess of Wales, the newspaper said.

Mr Piers Morgan (35) was questioned for 30 minutes at Charing Cross police station yesterday, the third anniversary of the death of the princess, by detectives from Scotland Yard's Serious and Organised Crime Unit.

He was not arrested and said later: "There was no evidence to support any such allegation."

The police investigation concerns a story published in the Mirror in April 1998.
