A 36-year-old Dublin man was remanded in custody at Kilmainham District Court yesterday charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The charge relates to an incident in which a private bus crashed into a number of vehicles on the Naas Road in Dublin at lunchtime on Sunday. A 61-year-old woman was killed at Bluebell.

Peter Clarke (36), Kiltalawn Court, Tallaght appeared before Judge Bridget Reilly yesterday morning.

Det Sgt Seán Hogan of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation said he had arrested Mr Clarke at Tallaght hospital at 6.35pm on Sunday, under the Road Traffic Act.

He was taken to Kevin Street Garda station where he was questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Det Sgt Hogan said he was released at 5.40am yesterday and rearrested at 5.55am, when he was charged with dangerous driving causing death.

Mr Clarke, who had a number of cuts and bruises on his face as well as a bandage above his left temple when he appeared in court, was given a copy of the charge sheet, but made no reply when charged, Det Sgt Hogan said.

Solicitor for Mr Clarke, Caroline Egan, said she would be making no application for bail during yesterday's hearing.

Dressed in a red jacket and navy trousers, Mr Clarke spoke briefly with Ms Egan, before she requested and was granted a brief adjournment to consult with her client. Some 10 minutes later, Ms Egan asked that Mr Clarke be granted medical and psychiatric treatment while in custody. Judge Reilly granted this request.

Judge Reilly told the court she was remanding Mr Clarke in custody to reappear at Cloverhill District Court this Friday.
