His death is one of three traffic accident fatalities in the Republic since Thursday.

A woman was killed and a man injured when a car crashed in Co Leitrim early yesterday. The woman, who was named as Ms Kathleen Daly (51), from Effrinagh, Kilclare, Co Leitrim, was a passenger in the vehicle which hit an embankment and turned over in a field at Effrinagh, about four miles north of Carrick-on-Shannon.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 50s was injured. They were taken to Sligo General Hospital.

In the Dublin accident the 60-year-old pedestrian, who lived locally, was knocked down by a car while crossing the road at the junction between Lower Gardiner Street and Summerhill Road on Thursday evening. He died at the Mater Hospital.

In Co Galway a 70-year-old motorist died when his car crashed into a wall in Ballinasloe, also on Thursday.

In a marine incident a Spanish fishing vessel recovered the badly decomposed body of a man while hauling in their nets about 32 miles south-west of Valentia Island, Co Kerry.

According to the Irish Coast Guard marine Rescue sub-centre in Valentia, the crew of the Cantabrico said the man was wearing fisherman's clothing of a red waterproof jacket and yellow leggings.
