Train line reopens after bomb discovered in Newry detonates

A suspicious device that led to the suspension of rail services between Dundalk and Newry exploded this evening.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said there were no injuries and no damage to property as a result of the incident.

Rail services across the Border were shut down from at least 4.45pm to 8.30pm after the viable device was discovered on the Barracric Road in Newry.

Detectives have recovered what they described as remnants of the device, which will now be investigated.

There was no indication as to who may have been responsible for the device.

Insp Lorraine Dobson thanked the public and requested anyone with any information to make themselves known to police.

Meanwhile, the discovery of a second device in north Belfast has prompted the closure of the Ardoyne Road between the Crumlin Road and Alliance Avenue. Estoril Park was also closed and a number of properties evacuated.
