A man is in a critical condition after being assaulted in the middle of a busy Dublin city street on last night.

His attacker took off his t-shirt and hoody top before attacking the man and then put them back on again before walking away from the scene.

The assault took place in the middle of the road on the city’s Aston Quay at about 9.30pm.

The 33-year-old victim, who had been crossing the street when he was set upon, was rushed to St James’s Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

At this stage it is unclear whether the two men were known to each other or whether it was a random attack. No weapon was involved.

Given that it took place on a generally busy city centre thoroughfare, gardaí believe vehicles would have had to stop to avoid the men during the altercation and may have crucial information.

The suspect was described as being in his 20s or 30s and is well built with dark hair.

He was wearing a light coloured t-shirt and grey hoody top with white writing on the front and grey tracksuit trousers.

He left the area in the company of two other men in the direction of Westmorland Street.

The other men were described as wearing dark tracksuits.

Gardaí have asked any witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Pearse Street station on (01) 6669000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or any other station.
