A Cork man was jailed for life last night after he was found guilty at the Central Criminal Court of the murder of his girlfriend at a flat in Cork city last year. The jury reached its verdict by a majority of 11 to one that Don O'Halloran was guilty of murder.

He was O Caoimh sentenced to the mandatory life imprisonment. O'Halloran (27), unemployed, of Kilnaglory, Ballincollig, Co Cork, had pleaded not guilty to the murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Ms Catherine Hegarty (33), from White church, at Gerald Griffin Street, Blackpool, Cork, between 11 p.m. on February 26th and 12.20 a.m. on February 27th last year.

The jury heard that Ms Hegarty died after she was stabbed three times with a carving knife.
