Cork legends to select new manager

Cork greats Denis Coughlan, John Fenton and Jimmy Barry Murphy have been charged with finding a successor to Gerald McCarthy

Cork greats Denis Coughlan, John Fenton and Jimmy Barry Murphy have been charged with finding a successor to Gerald McCarthy. The triumvirate will meet GAA director general Paraic Duffy this weekend to get the ball rolling.

It is hoped the new senior hurling manager and his backroom team will be in place by April 5th when Cork come up against Kilkenny in the national league.

Duffy will oversee the process but ultimately it will be down to the three-man committee who they recommend to the county board.

All three have achieved legendary status in Cork with former dual stars Coughlan and Barry Murphy winners of All-Ireland titles in both codes. Barry Murphy also coached the county between 1996 and 2000, claiming the Liam McCarthy trophy in 1999.

Fenton claimed two hurling medals during his playing career, most notably when he captained the Rebels to the centenary All-Ireland in 1984.

Meanwhile, all but one of the developmental panel that played under McCarthy this year has been deemed surplus to requirements by interim boss John Considine.

Only corner back Conor O'Sullivan makes the team for this weekend’s clash with Clare as the striking 2008 panel return following McCarthy’s departure.
