Ireland's Mark Carroll will not compete in the Boston marathon next month due to a hip injury.

The news comes as a blow to the runner after his encouraging debut in marathon in New York last year.

Carroll will now focus on the track-and-field season in which he hopes to make a serious bid at the 10,000 metres in the world championships.

Anne Keenan-Buckley is set to lead the Irish's women's team at the world cross country championships in Switzerland later this month. Robert Connolly will lead the men's team.
