A Sudanese cargo plane crash outside the capital Khartoum today killed one Sudanese and six foreigners from former Soviet states in eastern Europe.

The plane, coming from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates and probably carrying aid, was due to land in Khartoum before heading on to Nyala in South Darfur state, reports said.

The plane crashed at about 9 a.m. local time about 50 kilometres outside the capital in the desert. Sudanese radio said the dead included six Russians.

The plane belonged to a private Sudanese company called Air West, although Sudanese radio said it was a UN plane on its way to Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast.
