Kris Boyd insists he would be a success in the Premier League after Birmingham boss Alex McLeish revealed plans to make another swoop for the Rangers striker.

The 26-year-old is out of contract in the summer and yet to sign a new deal with the Scottish champions, citing continuing uncertainty at the club for his delay in making a decision over his future.

Boyd has also been linked with Blackburn, Wigan and Hull and is confident he would be a hit in the English top flight - if he decides to quit Scotland.

He told the Daily Record: “It would be nice to play in the Premiership. I’ve confidence in my own ability and believe I’d score goals at the highest level.

“But at the moment, all I want is to do well for Rangers and help them win more trophies.

“Sitting here I genuinely don’t know if I’ll stay or go, but I’d be happy to sign on again here and if I’m still banging in goals for Rangers five or six years from now I’ll be very happy.

“I’ve spoken to Walter Smith about my situation and he respects my decision to take my time about it and not to rush into anything.

“On the outside it’s easy for people to say ‘Come on, just sign again for Rangers’ but it’s not as easy as that.

“At this moment in time the club is not stable and that is on my mind. This club needs stability. It needs to be sorted out.

“The gaffer, Ally McCoist, Kenny McDowall and Ian Durrant need to be given contracts. That should be the priority.”

Birmingham boss McLeish has spoken with representatives of the Scotland international since the January transfer window closed.

He is looking to bring in six or seven new players before the start of next season as City aim to build on a successful first season back in the Premier League.

McLeish told Press Association Sport: “I really can’t talk about players that are under contract. It looks tantamount to tapping up.

“But we have got a number of players we will try and pursue in the summer.

“I can talk about Boyd because he’s out of contract and we have made contact with Rangers also, in terms of showing courtesy.

“Is signing Boyd still a possibility? Boyd is ongoing. He’s talking to other clubs as well. He’s a free agent - he has got that luxury.

“Have we spoken to his people since January? Yes.”
