An outbreak of avian flu near Clonakilty in Co Cork last week poses no risk to public health, said the Department of Agriculture.

Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of a low-pathogenic strain of Avian Influenza Virus in pheasants in Clonakilty. The department says the strain differs from the deadly HN51 virus, and tests from a broiler flock in the area proved negative, indicating the virus has not spread.

Further test results relating to pheasants found in nearby Barryroe are due in the coming days. The birds have been slaughtered as a precautionary measure and biosecurity measures will remain in place in Barryroe, including a temporary 1km restriction zone, while results are awaited.

The department said there is no concern relating to consumption of poultry and there are no restrictions on poultry movements outside the 1km restriction zones.
