At least 36 passengers were killed, including 14 women and seven children, today in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh when an overcrowded bus plunged into a pond, police said.
The accident happened as the bus, which was carrying 50 people, attempted to round a bend in the road near Govindgarh, 520 km (325 miles) east of the state capital, Raipur, district police chief Ravi Gupta said.
Divers were attempting to retrieve the bodies of the dead before a crane lifted the bus from the water. The number killed was expected to rise, Gupta said.
