Long drives in the south-west should be less boring from now on following the erection of life size animal sculptures on the N21, N20, N24 and N7 roads.

The sculptures include 12 large cows in the colours of the rainbow walking behind each other, and six cows grazing by the roadside.

One of the cows is 6 ft high by 9 ft long.

In all, Irish-American artist Jim Collins, will create 36 full-size animals as an installation along the Adare and Limerick southern ring roads.

The sculptures are part of Limerick County Council's programme of public art projects according to Mr Vincent O'Shea, spokesman for the county council's arts office.

The artist is based in Chattanooga, Tennesee, and has has completed a large number of public art commissions in the US.
