Ireland: An anti-war activist was arrested in Galway city on Saturday during a walkabout by EU employment and social affairs ministers, reports Lorna Siggins in Galway.

Mr Eoin Rice (34), of Newry, Co Down, was charged with public order offences. He was part of a small group of anti-war protesters with placards in the Shop Street/High Street area.

Gardaí have confirmed that prior to being charged Mr Rice was taken to University College Hospital, Galway, for an X-ray. This was on the advice of a doctor who saw Mr Rice at Mill Street Garda station. A Garda spokesman said Mr Rice had resisted detention, and any struggle that took place was while he was being arrested.

Mr Rice was released after being charged, and is due in court next month.
