Algiers - Seventeen people were killed in an operation by security forces against an armed Islamic group near the village of Sid-Boubekeur near Saida in western Algeria, the state television reported last night.
Fifteen Islamic militants were killed in the operation, along with two women they had been holding, the television said, adding that security forces had rescued a young girl who had been kidnapped by the group.
